Exclamation eats starters

<TABLE><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top width="100%">Hi E1
im new here and need help, im gonna go look and see if i can find the answers i need here some where?
i may need help to search for what i want to find or i may stumble on it.

my 1st problem is starter related.
i have a 1986 f150 w/ 6 cyl 300, 3 speed c6 (my sons truck). we replaced motor in it and started having starter problems, after using truck for ?
not long, (have not attempted to work on truck for over a year so recolection may not be 100%). starter went out, we replaced starter, after a few days starter went out again we replaced it only to last a few days. this has happened repeatedly. the auto parts store would not replaced the starters because nothing was wrong with them. i took starter to remanufacturer and they showed me the drive gears were bad (hook up starter on work bench, hold 2x4 against gears and energize, starter motor runs but gears dont turn 2x4 binds. we can replace gear drive in starter and truck will start a few times and then we have to replace gear drive in starter again. some how there are holes in tranny housing from some thing being thrown by flex plate? (bell part around torque converter) have tranny on way should it today am going to replace tranny and see if we still have problem. I think i will. my brother has another 300 that we will change out with if we do to try to correct. but im baffled as to what the problem may be, have replaced flex plate already but did not helpn NE1 have any suggestions?

Thanks Jim

when you replaced the engine, did you put the spacer plate between the engine and trans?? it sounds like you have the starter to far into the bell, and the flexplate it breaking the drive.

the teeth on the bendix are good, its the clutch inside the bendix that fails

Also sounds like there is/has been debris in the bellhousing - lost bolts/nuts/pieces of ring gear, etc that get picked up by the flexplate and tossed against the sidewalls. Clean out the bell and block recesses when you have it apart.

edit: FWIW, I've also found that parts houses carry at least two different lines of accessories like starters. After a similar round of troubles several years ago, I asked my counter guys at NAPA if they carried a better starter. They do, but most people on the street are looking for a cheap fix. Now the guys know if they carry more than one level of a part that I want the best one. Costs more initially, but is a lot cheaper in the long run.

I happen to have a great NAPA store here.

Call Matt Vose at SPI Distribution 1-800-361-1714 and tell him your problem. He carries both new and reman starters. Tell you are from FTE when you call. It sounds like you are getting some of those "lifetime" starters. I have had issues with some of the parts places myself. Their counter people are only told how to test to their specs, and don't have the equipmet to do a stall test on a starter.

after closer examination of bendix teeth i found
1) the first 2/3's of teeth about the thickness of flex plate are slightly worn looks normal for depth of engagement.
2) a little over 1/2 way down the face of the tooth. was worn, ehh maybe a little shy, might slip easily.

I saw in another thread there are different numbers of teeth on starters 9 and 10, and there are a varity of teeth on a flywheel/flex plate.

I have bought 2 flywheels 1st we thought we might have bent it when we tightened tranny and torque was not seated correctly.
2nd was going to replace tranny im wondering if it was wrong???
stupid thought. any way got it out and was looking at flex plate and the strip between 3 oblong holes was bent slightly, so rather than take the chance got another.

all 3 flex plates are the same with 164 teeth.
the starter has 9 teeth.

Is it possible i have the wrong starter, i need 1 with 10 teeth?
and why would parts stores only list 1 starter?
