eats starters
im new here and need help, im gonna go look and see if i can find the answers i need here some where?
i may need help to search for what i want to find or i may stumble on it.
my 1st problem is starter related.
i have a 1986 f150 w/ 6 cyl 300, 3 speed c6 (my sons truck). we replaced motor in it and started having starter problems, after using truck for ?
not long, (have not attempted to work on truck for over a year so recolection may not be 100%). starter went out, we replaced starter, after a few days starter went out again we replaced it only to last a few days. this has happened repeatedly. the auto parts store would not replaced the starters because nothing was wrong with them. i took starter to remanufacturer and they showed me the drive gears were bad (hook up starter on work bench, hold 2x4 against gears and energize, starter motor runs but gears dont turn 2x4 binds. we can replace gear drive in starter and truck will start a few times and then we have to replace gear drive in starter again. some how there are holes in tranny housing from some thing being thrown by flex plate? (bell part around torque converter) have tranny on way should it today am going to replace tranny and see if we still have problem. I think i will. my brother has another 300 that we will change out with if we do to try to correct. but im baffled as to what the problem may be, have replaced flex plate already but did not helpn NE1 have any suggestions?
Thanks Jim
1) the first 2/3's of teeth about the thickness of flex plate are slightly worn looks normal for depth of engagement.
2) a little over 1/2 way down the face of the tooth. was worn, ehh maybe a little shy, might slip easily.
I saw in another thread there are different numbers of teeth on starters 9 and 10, and there are a varity of teeth on a flywheel/flex plate.
I have bought 2 flywheels 1st we thought we might have bent it when we tightened tranny and torque was not seated correctly.
2nd was going to replace tranny im wondering if it was wrong???
stupid thought. any way got it out and was looking at flex plate and the strip between 3 oblong holes was bent slightly, so rather than take the chance got another.
all 3 flex plates are the same with 164 teeth.
the starter has 9 teeth.
got 10 tooth bendix installed, and all hooked up.
Sounds great, no grinding, very smooth.
havent got truck started yet no spark will do some more diag. then start new thread if needed
Thanks all, the help is really appreaciated
