I moved a 50hp kubota 4wd tractor with front end loader on a 25 ft duel tandem goose neck over the weekend. The truck ran cool, smooth, and the two speed shifted smooth as butter. was able to maintain a level road speed of 45mph, it just took some time to get there. The little motor could defenatly use a shot in the arm. I have a spare motor I am thinking of building for a small blower and merc crank, we'll see I,m still shopping around. Will post some updated pics soon if I can get the page to quit locking up on me.
Wow, thats pretty cool. I'll bet she sounded great under load.
Years ago I used to run an old "poppin' Johhny" that my dad had (an old horizontal 2 cylinder John Deere) It was very distinctive when you had a load on it.
I'm running dual 3" stacks with no mufflers, it was very loud. I have a digital camera and video camera I will try to get some footage next time I pull and download it to a link somehow like the guy with the detroit did. You are so right, it is hard to beat the sound of a loaded down John Deere horizontal twin!!! I am working on a '37 model D. Its 2 cyl measures a whopping 501cid.
Woohooo! I'll bet everyone knew you were coming long before they could see you!
Too cool! Can't wait to see it (and hear it) in action
Wow, dad's got a couple of B models. One is a late 30's (spoked wheels) the other is an early 40's (still has cast frame rails) Need a piston and rod for the early late 30's one. They can be fun
All right! Feels good when you get that shift right doesn't it? With 3" stacks everyone will hear if you mess up. Amazing what these old trucks can do when treated right.
Matt-that is a bad-*** hauler.I am waiting for my 1st tow soon.Is it hard to get over 55?I am worried my 272 will not pull at 55.I do not need to go any faster than that, but have never shifted the 2 speed rear axle, yet. Will I like it?I will be finishing painting in 07 as well.I would like to see more pics.Matt--do you have a relative --YVON?I know a machinist by that name in CAL.GOOD PICS.---BILL
athanks walford's 56, I don't see you having any problems getting to 55 with an overhead valve engine. unloaded 55 is not even an issue but depending on how much your pulling you might have some problems. I am assuming the tractor I was pulling is at least 5,000 lbs along with the trailer that is about the same 10,000 lbs and 45 is not bad for a 100 hp motor. I think the 272's had 167 hp so I'm sure the extra 67 hp will help alot, add a small 4bbl carb and some duals and who knows. the two speed is a daisy to shift. When I fist got the truck going the two speed did not shift well, but I did not have a load on the truck. with a load it shifts great, I think you will enjoy it. I don't think I have any ken folk out that a way, good looking project by the way. I'm guessing you plan on putting a ramp bed on it? What kinda muscle car you haulin if you don,t mind me asking?
F6GUY--I am hauling a 1963 studebaker avanti-R2 SUPERCHARGED!!!My father-in-law started the restoration, and now I am near done.It is 289 4 barrel supercharged with the paxton setup.I have to install the new radiator and then adjust some things then I think she will look cool on the 56 F600.
Hopefully the other 56 F600 I am buying will be my next project.Still have to save a little more.I hope the 272 will pull like you said.I think the name plate said 143 h.p. and that should do what I need.---thanks BILL
F6Guy, I read your post with much interest; please tell me what motor you're running in that F6! At 100 hp, is it the 223 six? AMAZING if it is, that they would put such a little motor in such a big truck. Biut times were different then, right? And you got where you wanted to go!!
brider I am running a stock( with the exception of dual exhaust and a cold air intake) flathead 239 V8. It is small, I don't understand why Ford did not put the 255 mercs in the F5 and F6 trucks.
