This one's got me a little confused....the motor is in an 82, but it's not the original engine, 351W 4V Motor.
Oil pressure will sit where it's supposed to be for a long while at idle, then all of a sudden just drop real quick(without touching gas or anything), then slowly creep back up. Oil is at correct level, no engine noises cept for a squeaky belt. Sometimes oil pressure is good when revving sometimes a little low. has an aftermarket 'Autogage' guage.
It might save a lot of work. I have seen a lot of money wasted on bogus gauge readings. Most of the time if it drops that drastically, you will hear a little tapping from the engine till it goes back up.
Sounds like a sender or gauge problem to me. I've learned to drive and listen to the engine rather than pay much attention to gauges. They're helpful when they work, but are no substitute for 'knowing' your engine. I agree with Franklin2
Check the grounding strap between the block (on the driver's side) and the firewall. If rusted broken or removed, this can affect the oil pressure and teperature guages.
it's a mechanical aftermarket guage- no electrical wires involved. Truck isn't a street driver, but it's running fine.
Back a few years ago when I was playing with 351's, I used the optional oil filter mount that allowed for a remote filter. I liked it so much that I have one of those on my 460. The point of this is that there are two plugs on the oil filter mounting bracket that can be used for anything you want, like an axillary oil pressure sending unit.
I have mine set up to kill the ignition when pressure drops below 10 psi for a period of 30 seconds. It is not hard to do, just a time delay relay between an axillary sending unit and ignition module. I also have one for fuel pressure. Both are wired to another FI-FO (First in-First Out) relay that illuminates either the 4X4 lamp or the Up shift Lamp depending on which relay took out the ignition system. Since my truck is a 2WD automatic those circuits and bulbs were not used but pre-wired in the cluster.
I realize this is way more than what you need, but posted for those who may want to try it.

be sure there is no air in the tube for the oil pressure gauge for this will cause inacurtate readings. un screw the tube from the gauge and get you a soup can start the engine and let the tube drain in the can till its about quater fullto be sure all the air is out. shut off the truck and quickly screw the line back on the gauge before the oil drains back down the tube. be sure to check the oil when your done.
i have had bought expensive set of autometer and the oil pressure just wouldnt work right kept surgeing. an old getelman at the parts house (whos been selling parts and giving advice since the begining of time) told me to purg the line of all the air and he garenteed it would work. and ill be it did. now i bleed the oil line everytime i install a gauge or crack the line open for any reason
