And this is why, no matter how politically incorrect and how much people complain, unless the price of gas hits $5.00 per gallon, most American drivers won't change their driving behavior / choice of vehicle (myself included).

They won't change drastically. I know that when gas hit $3.00 this summer I change my habits a little. I refused to pay over $3.00 per gallon for premium for my Mustang so it sat most of the summer.

Four years ago my truck was a 96' F250 (351W, 9.9mpg ave), she had the Exp, and we thought it would be fun to have something sporty, so we bought a 93' Honda Prelude. That thing gets 30mpg and became my daily commuter once gas hit $3/gal.
So for us a full size truck, an suv and an econo-sport car covered ALL bases.....or so I thought.
There's justification for a motorcycle too, at least for a few months.

There was a time when I calculated that just based on my work commute, if gas hit $4 a gallon, the fuel savings of a diesel VW Jetta compared to my 94 4.0L gas Explorer would almost cover the cost of the car payment.

Since then, I moved closer to work.
