I've done everything that's been suggested on this board twice now, and again my clunk came back. The first time I used synthetic grease, which only alleviated the problem for about two weeks. The second time I used some red grease that said it was meant for extreme pressures and temperatures, and it lasted about a month. Both times the clunk seemed to come back after hard braking on the highway, although it isn't nearly as bad as it used to be right now, but I assume it's going to continue to get worse. Everyone on this board said to use Teflon grease, but I couldn't find that anywhere, except for a small tub of brake grease that cost three times as much as anything else. Is that what I should use? It didn't list any other uses besides brakes on the container.
Also, maybe I'm just doing the procedure wrong. I'll go through what I've done, and maybe somebody can tell me if I need to do something else:
I first unclipped the boot from the middle of the driveshaft, then unbolted the rear of the shaft from the axle. After removing the rear part, I cleaned both the male splines and female splines of all grease and debris. I then coated all surfaces with grease, extending about 1/2 inch past the splines on the male and female sections to ensure lubrication under compression. I then bolted the shaft back on and reclipped the boot. Am I missing something? This is obviously what's making the clunk, because the noise and feeling completely disappear once I do this, yet for some reason it keeps coming back. NEED HELP!!

In that case your splines are worn. You need a new d/s. Sorry.
swenson, I had this same problem and use a white grease. Not sure of the exact name. I don't think it was the synthetic. I got the grease at Advance or Auto Zone. It's in the small round cans and the grease is actually white. Ever since I done this I haven't had any problems and it's been a little over a year now. Honney may be right your splines maybe worn out. Hope this works for you.
I don't think the splines are worn because the blue "rubbery" coating on the male splines is still there with no visible sign of wear, and the female splines are completely angular with no signs of wear. The shaft pieces fit together very tightly with no apparent movement laterally, but still this damn clunk keeps coming back. Any other possible suggestions?
you may try remove the boot completly and getting a grease cap. This will allow you have a grease fitting to pump it full of grease and keep the grease in the same place. it is somewhat under pressure that way too. therefore removing the clunk. I just had mine done and the cluck is gone. You can get one at a driveshaft shop. then all you need to do is separate the shaft, tap it on, and fill it with grease. hand grease it first though and fill the rest with grease gun. hope this helps.
