I noticed something yesterday with my '03 SportTrac 4.0 SOHC 4x4, and was wondering if it is "normal," or a sign of someting to come.
I started the truck in my garage Sunday (cold start), and had left the heater on from the day before. While I was on the brake and backing up, I heard the compressor engage and then the vehicle surged in reverse. It did the same thing this morning when I was driving to work. Any ideas as to what may have caused the surge?
I've been dealing with an idle shudder for a while that consistently occurs after the engine warms up. I replaced the IAC hoping it would eliminate the shudder, but it didn't. Any thoughts on whether the idle shudder and the surge after the compressor engaged could be related?
Hmmm.....the A/C compressor should engage only in defrost mode; if it's running in plain ol' heat you've got a problem. Not sure if a bad HVAC control head would cause this.
Steve...I'm an idiot. I've tried to repeat the phenomenon over the last couple of mornings and noticed that the compressor's engagement and surge in reverse happens with the dial is set to either full defrost, or defrost/floor. The compressor does not engage when in straight heat. Any thoughts?
That's normal; the EMC is trying to adjust the idle to compensate for compressor engagement. Back out with the HVAC controls set to heat only, not defrost, and you shouldn't get the surge.
