Ford's tow command is not supposed to work on pre 05 trucks. I have a feeling it is intregral to the CAN system. You can howevery put just about any aftermarket in. I really like the hoppy line. The produce a hook up wire that makes the controller plug and play, no splicing the boxes' output to the factory pigtail.
Yes, pull the lower trim off and look up towards the radio. It's usually tie wraped to a support rail, but you should find a squarish 6 pin connector somewhere under there.
Just because that's what dealerships like, doesn't mean that's what you need. There are two primary types, inertial and electronic. You need to pick which you need and make sure it will be capable of triggering your # of axles.
Take a look at rv.net in the forums. Most of us are using the Prodigy. Supposedly its the same as the Ford, made by the same company. I just upgraded to it, plugs right in under the dash when you buy the Ford wire for another $10.
2) Even if Ford put a controller wiring harness in the glovebox (or anywhere else) you won't use it. When you order your Prodigy, tell them you want the Ford harness.
3) Remove the large panel below your steering column (held in place by four plastic twist-lock screws)
4) Look to the right of the open cavity and you'll see the factory plug-in harness, generally attached to a piller by one of those "ribbed" push-in holders.
TXHillCountry...thanks dude! The photo really helped!
I'll confess that I "borrowed" that photo. When I did my Expeditions and F150's, that connector was bundled up under the dash and super easy to find and get to. I searched for about two hours one day looking for that crazy thing on my F250 and finally did about 15 minutes worth of searching here and found it.
Like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.
