I am getting ready to buy a used truck. I need a Ford pre 1999 F350 4x4 crew cab with a diesel my question is what year. I had a 6.9 and was not real happy with the power so a 7.3 is called for but what is the advantages and disadvantages of the 7.3 and the 7.3 power stroke. Is there a clear answer??
Biggest issue for me - cost. $330 a piece for reman. PS injectors, $1600 for the computer, 16 quarts of oil, cam sensor; $140-220. The PS can be modified more easily, though, and much larger power gains can be achieved. I guess if you never have to replace any of those parts, it's not that bad, but a set of injectors or the computer would keep my truck off the road for a while if I had a PS.
For me, personally, I prefer the lack of a computer controlling my engine's fuel delivery. Maybe it really doesn't make any difference, but I just feel better having something that is a little more... sturdy.
fordtowman,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
If I answer your question it will be rather biased, I am rather attached to my 6.9 turbo and all it's power. But I built it that way.
Actually I think the 6.9 IDI is a better engine than the 7.3 IDI, the cylinder walls are to thin on the 7.3 IDI.
The Power Stroke downside is the repair costs as pointed out above. I just bought a set of high performance injectors for my IDI for 297.99 which is less than one injector for the Power Stroke.
A fried CPS will leave you setting unless you have a spare.
The early Power Strokes don't have that much more power than the IDI does, I think the 97 and earlier strokes topped out at 235 HP.
Although it has not been on a dyno, I am sure I am pumping out more power than that by a good bit.
