Hello all. Glad I found this place. Well I just bought my first truck, which is a 1995 Ford F-150 Eddie Bouer edition. Well I have two problems. The power steering is leaking just a bit. (Not a lot, just a small amount around the fitting.) and the side step (Running Board) has some flex in it when you get on it. We we knoe how to fix that. Going to cut the old rusted bolts down, and get the head out of the little space. There were going to put a nut where the bolt head was, and put a bolt from the bottom. But my thing is the power steering. Around the fiitng is where it is leaking (Not coming from hose, cause hose is clean of oil.) I was just wondering if there is a o-ring that needs to be replaced, or if some teflon tape would work (Thats what I have been told to use by my grandpa, and He proably has more experience than what we all have combined.Got a funny story to tell you guys.) But is there a o-ring, or do I need to teflon tape it? Thanks guys for your help.
A power steering hose has two operations: first, supply pressurized hydraulic fluid to the steering box or rack and pinion this is known as the "high side pressure hose". The main pressure hose carries high pressure fluid to assist in the steering operation. The secondary hose is a low pressure return line and allows depressurized fluid to return to the power steering pump. When a power steering hose fails it is usually because of leakage or complete hose failure. To replace power steering hoses simply remove either end of the hose to be replaced and reassemble with new hose, refill and recheck system. You could try using teflon tape (Pink) if you know for sure it's the fitting.
power steering hoses, where they attach to the pump or the power steering system, are bolted down with copper washers between the bolt head and the fitting, and the fitting and the pump/whatever it is bolted to. These copper washers don't go bad, but will leak if reused. If the leak appears to be coming from where the fitting attaches to the pump/power steering system, it is likely that these washers are leaking.
Well for ****s and giggles me and dad tomorrow after school are going to take it off and put tefflon tape on it. If it works well I thank you guys, if not, I guess well need washers. Were can I get these copper washers and how much are they (I know you can't reuse copper washers, cause my Porsche 924 use's them, and they can't be reused alot of the time (The only time they can be reused is when they are used as space fillers.) So thanks guy, and all I can say is, I hope the tefflon tape works.
And where can I edit my sig at, cause I can't find it anywhere. Thanks.
At the top of this page look for "User CP" click on that and look to the left and you will see a list of options. As with the copper washers those are called "crush washers" and can only be used once. I'm sure those are available at most automotive part supply stores. You could try NAPA if you have one where you live...i have one 5 minutes from here....very handy!

Well I rember I have some extra ones, from where I was working on my Porsche 924. Thnx man, but what is the option you click on to change it, cause I looked for 5 minuets esterday. Thanks
I don't remember if it was this forum or another one, but there was one where you had to have a certain number of posts (20 or 30???) before you could make a signature. If you don't see the Edit Signature link in your User CP then you probably need to make some more posts first.
As for the leaking PS hose; if you can't seem to stop the leak using teflon tape or a new crush washer, don't be afraid to just replace the hose! With older trucks like these it can never hurt to replace the older hoses anyway. I had a leaking fitting on a power steering hose recently and picked up a new hose, fittings and all, at the parts store for around $20. Just something to consider.
Well it isn't the hose that is leaking, it's the fitting, and I'm just trying to do stuff so I don't have to buy one, but if the tape and new washer doesn't work, then I will replace the hose. Believe I'm not afffraid to replace, just trying to save money.
i don't know if the crush washers are unique to certain vehicles or not, but every power steering hose i've taken apart was a flared fitting like the brake lines, no washer, no gasket, no o-ring. if that's the case, i just remove it, clean it really good, put the teflon tape on it and screw it back down. if it still leaks then you'll probably need a new hose.
