Post Fuel pumps

Help, I have a '86 302 which has two electric fuel pumps, one in the tank (low pressure) and one on the frame rail (high pressure). Last night I had one fail (have not diagnosed yet). My question is can I replace the in tank model with a newer model high pressure pump so that I only have one pump to worry about.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Fuel pumps

To go to a single intank pump you'd need a '90+ tank and you'd have to wire it up properly.
