Smile 94 idit questions

Hello all this is my first post. This truck has 113k on it and is a standard trans 4x4 I love this thing and it runs really good
1. If I pat the throttle petal say up to 1500 rpms the engine quits when it returns to idle.
2. I changed the IP timing from about a pencil width to the passenger side back to the orginal mark this gave me more black smoke on start-up when cold and a little black haze when at operating temp when I get on it. Is this normal I gained about 2 mpg when i did this and it seems quiter no gain in power.
3. Do the glow plugs work every time when the engine is started even when at operating temp.
4. From reading some of the post here I am sure I need new glow plugs it runs rough and smokes white when it first starts up It really did this alot after sitting for the last 2 weeks. By the way I am sending this from 80 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico this is neat.
thanks in advance for the help.
dhs

Watergetter,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

For your first problem with the stalling, run a double dose of Diesel Kleen in two tanks of fuel through it. That will clean up the fuel system and lubricate it. Deposits could be your problem.
Have you changed the fuel filter?
Have you changed the air filter?
When you say a pencil width to the passenger side, how far would you guess it was?
I am hoping you meant pencil lead width.

IP mark to the passenger side of the mark on the IP drive gear housing is advanced timing.
Advanced timing is better for more power, but there is a limit as to how far you can advance it.
If it is advanced to far, you will hear a Power Stroke rattle when it is idling.

Thanks very much for your reply I have changed the fuel filter about 1500 mile ago infact we did a full service including the air filter, oil filter swapped the whole truck to Royal purple engine, trans, diffs, transfercase I did run a good dose of lucus injector cleaner thru it When I get back to land I will run the Diesel Kleen. As far as the pincel width yes it was a lead width when I bought the truck it was about a lead width to the passenger side I moved it back toward the drivers side to the origional marks. Also I did increase the idle about 150 rpms what is the proper idle idle rpm for a manual trans. again thanks very much for you help.

Warm idle should be about 650 to 700 RPM.
