4X4 in/out problems
New guy here from WI. This place looks like it'll be a great resource and hopefully someone can help with a problem that just cropped up.
My 01 V10 Wouldn't go into 4x4 last saturday so I just left the switch on 4x4 and after about 20 miles, it started working but the light on the dash didn't come on. It came on yesterday while I was plowing, twice for a few minutes each time, but today the light's off and the darn thing won't shift back to 2wd.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Steve
If I'm not mistaken the 'auto' 4X4 will activate only when the vehicle exceeds ~5mph. I don't like that feature since we are often in off-highway situations where the 4X won't engage until it's too late, so I always turn the front hubs to the "Lock" position before I need 4X.
A couple of years ago w/our F250HDSD I had a similar experience as you and noticed that one of my frt hubs was "Lock" and the other was "Auto". When I syncronized the hubs and turned the dash dial to 2WD the 4X light went off and the transfer case disengaged.
That happened down in Baja, so I didn't make it to the dealer for a few days to have everything checked out. Apparently I did no damage and all worked fine.

PS You'll notice that I'm a New User as well. I'm sure that you will get better information after my tidbit.

I have some other suggestions but let's start there.
The hubs should lock at the same time HOWEVER they can require a couple rotations of the tire to fully "seat"/ Speed doesn't matter. What DOES matter is a bit of forward rotation. That's why the LOCK feature is on there just in case you get stuck and cannot get forward motion to help seat the hubs. Plus, if the vacuum pulse fails, the LOCK is your back up.
I don't know where I got the idea about the 5mph. I do see after reading the Owner's Manual again that the automatic hubs have about a 45 sec delay in case of errant switching, so maybe I didn't give them time. I do know that I got stuck twice in the sand in front of our house (Baja) when relying on the auto-engaging 4WD. Once with the F250 and again just a couple of wks ago w/ the Excursion.
I'm now in the habit of locking the hubs when I air-down the tires.
