Buying my first Ford
1999 F150 Supercab XLT 4x4
4.6 engine
auto
limited slip 3.55 rear end
tow package
I'd like to know if there are any specific problems I should look out for on this truck. It seems to be in very good condition with low mileage. The price is average to high but represents the condition I think.
I'll be trading off my current 2000 Chev S10 POS and am looking forward to the Ford which I really like. I am just a bit worried about spending a whole lot of money on a used vehicle. Previously I never spent more than $5000 for used and this one is many time that price.
So. What should I check and what should I look out for.
The tires will need to be replaced in the near future and I would like to know what people prefer for this type of truck. I mostly drive in the city but pull my 3000 lb trailer on the highway on the weekends (2 quads +). I don't plan to do much offroading (thats why I have the )quads. I dont plan on buying a tire with a really agressive tread. We do get a lot of snow and ice in the long winters here.
Lastly, almost all the trucks I have looked at have the front bench seat. I would really like captain's chairs. Is there any place where I can buy a used set?
Thanks for any help. I'm looking forward to becoming a happy new Ford owner.
I've only ever owned Fords, so I never bash any Brand-Xers,
I just know what I know.
I like the ergonomics of Ford trucks, stuff seems to be where it should be.
I read an earlier post about the proliferation of "techno" stuff
being piled onto these (any) trucks..(not just Fords) I agree.
My first Ford truck was a 1972 F100 Custom, with a 302 3-on-tree.
~~Loved that truck. I ask myself if I'm better off now with my 2003
being flown by wire, than back in the day... but I just shrug it off.
Fuel mileage is identical, and gee, I only got 260,000 miles on it before I rebuilt the carb.
I wonder about any new vehicles lasting that long.
As for your new purchase, congrats!!
You'll see some posting here who are vehemently against non-Ford products, and while my blood is Ford blue, Our friends in Detroit are ultimately wrangled by our friendly EPA agents, not the design dream-teams....
