After reading all the posts on loose steering, I crawled under my 99 F250 to look at the steering components. I can move the drag link about a 1/4 inch in each direction, as well as rotating it around it's axis about 20 degrees. My guess is that the joints are bad. Couple of questions. Haynes manual says to jack the truck up to remove the drag link, but I don't see why. Do I need to? Second, how do I replace the joints? I tried searching a few online parts suppliers, but couldn't come up with replacement parts.
I see no reason to jack up the vehicle long as you have room to work with it down. Check Rockauto.com for youre replament parts I got all the parts for the front of mine and changed last weekend. Inner, outer tie rods and ball joints.
Similar question for my truck? I can find Inner and Outer tie rod ends for left and right but no Drag Link parts.
Here is what I understand:
Outer Tie Rod Left & Right attach to the steering knuckles.
Left Outer Tie Rod End (passenger side) is longer, has a hole in it to mount the Drag Link, notches for the steering stabilizer and a machined end for a clamp.
Right Outer Tie Rod End (driver side) is short and has a threaded end which mates to the left with clamp.
Is the Drag Link also called an Inner Tie Rod (Left and Right)?
