As some have been following, I have a 79 Bronco with some issues. The stock 2 bbl carb is leaking profusely, so I have been working on adapting a 4 bbl to the intake. I had one running on it, with a minor vacuum leak, and it was a screamer, but wouldn't idle worth crap. Since I'm experimenting, I thought I might give this free quadrajet a try. I've heard good things about the reliability of their performance, but that they are somewhat involved when it comes to setup. What do I need to do to get this one on and running. I intend to give this a shot tomorrow. Are there any good resources out there that you guys are aware of. Step by steps or whatnot. I appreciate everyone's help!
i don't know about useing the quadrajet sounds like a headace. between bolt patterns and linkages not to mention the quad has large secondaries were ford models dont.
just my opinion buy an intake use the carb you have on.
Well here's my deal on using the one I have. It's a Holley 4160, and while it may make the engine run, I'm not a big fan of Holley's, I know they are capable of large power, they are a pain in the butt having to keep them adjusted. I do like working on my vehicles, but I don't like having to work on the same part over and over to keep it functional. I would like someday to strap an Edelbrock on it, but that may be someday way down the road. I am a conceptually driven person, and the concept of the Quadrajet makes sense, it by my research sounds like an efficient, but flexible peice of hardware. I'm already having to use a 2bbl to 4bbl adapter, as my intake is the stock 2bbl for this engine. The stock Holley 2300 carb has been rebuilt, and while it currently resides on the engine at the moment, I can tell a huge difference in performance between it, and the 4bbl, even in it's mal-adjusted state. So I will be doing my best to keep this conversion to the 4bbl on course. We'll see what happens.
The problem with the Q-jet will be kickdown linkage if you have an automatic tranny. There are no provisions for it on the Q-jet. Most Holleys, once set-up will stay that way. I've never had to constantly adjust any of them that I have had.
Well, it may have to be the Holley for a while then, I like having things functioning as they should, so it will have to live for a little while, but there is still and Edelbrock in this trucks future. ** When I tried to mate the Q-jet to the adapter that I have, the primary linkage wouldn't clear the plate, and since this plate looks weak enough, I don't want to go grinding on it, so we'll have to live with the Holley for a while. Who knows, maybe I'll be plesantly surprised with this carb.
