Trying to help my Son out, he purchased a 1966 F100 and the gas tank is all crudded up. He tried cleaning it with Diesal fuel but the lines keep clogging, can this tank be taken apart and cleaned or do you just buy a new one?
Welcome to FTE jarheadm198. Suggest before consider replacing you try flushing the tank. Not sure whether or not there are any internal parts like baffles, check valves, etc. in the tank. Out of all the salvage runs made over the years never thought to take a peek, perhaps next run will make a point to do so. I drained and removed tank on my 65 and considered using a 'fuel tank repair kit' so kinda followed the preparation instructions. First flushed tank with water, checking for any rust discharge. Then used dish soap and 'sloshed' it around in tank for awhile before rinsing. Next, used mild solution of rust converter (optional) then flushed again. Rust was not an issue so did not apply a sealer. After final flush thoroughly dried before reinstalling. Then put a canister fuel filter on inner fender, inline would work; anything to filter any remaining gunk, and have not had any problem w/ residue in carb since. Again welcome, should be getting additional suggestions from fellow members.
The temp solution, sometimes lasts a few weeks or years, while your waiting for a new tank is to remove it and clean it out. Have him pull the tank again put large thick washers or a length of heavy chain in the tank with some diesel fuel slosh the tank back and forth until your arms are tired, then do it again. This should knock off all the scale or loose stuff. Use a magnet to retrieve the items you put in when your done. I did this 5 years ago and haven't had any issues with clogged lines since then. You may get a lot more junk out of it so have a way of disposing of or filtering the used fuel. I ended up with half a 5 gallon bucket full of crud. There is also a gas tank sealing kit that is sold by Eastwood. You can go this route but it is a pain to do at times.
Another option is to take the tank to a radiator shop for them to clean it out for you. Depending on the place they might be able to coat the inside for you as well.
Apparently the Pic N Pulls in my area are required to puncture the tank for safety reason, quess they fear a stoogie smokin picker could set the yard ablaze. Found there are a few wrecking yards who carry the early vintage truck parts but they pull the part and charge considerably more.
