I get around 11 to 13 mpg on both Hwy and Town. I pull a 28' goose neck cattle trailer with mine and it drops to around 7 fully loaded, it really gives the old girl a work out. You can load the bed with as much as she will handle and wont notice a difference.
The problem areas ive had are the individual coil packs, ive only replaces two and they are about $80 new. (not a big deal to replace if you know which cylinder is the problem)
Up keep is normal just oil and grease. The 5.4 is by far the cheapest motor for up keep.
Ive got a 99 f250 5.4 4x4 and this truck takes a beating, I tow the max and then some almost once a week and it wont stop. Most people think because its a 5.4 its got to be a dog, but realy these new motors are engenered alot better basically i would compare the 5.4 with the old 460. And even the v10 doesnt have that many more horses, and parts are about half the price as diesels.

If possible go with an '02 or '03...just because they upgraded the front axle from the D50 to the D60. This happened mid-'01.

A few problem area's to consider. Ball joints, 4R100 auto tranny, spark plug blow out, rusted/broken exhaust manifold bolts, ESOF hubs, and over-used brakes. With the FX4 package...those terrible Rancho shocks!

This could be a direct relation to your 2nd question. The BEST thing to do...is follow the regular scheduled maintenance. When the schedule says to replace the tranny fluid...make sure to do it. The same for the coolant and spark plugs...etc.

If you do not know the history of the SD that you buy, then I would recommend a complete service. Engine oil/filter, tranny fluid, coolant, transfer case, spark plugs, etc. This way...you have a fresh start and begin a history trail.

Also...before buying...make sure to get an Oasis Report from your local friendly FORD service dept (just need the VIN). This will give the history of any warranty work and TSB performed. Plus...a CarFax is also a good idea.

Good luck...and enjoy your SD!
