What I have is a 1959 F100 styleside with stock rear end, stock drum brakes all around, C6 tranny, 17" cragar SS rims, 429 or 460 DOVE-A motor, DOVE-C heads, Iron intake DOVE-9425. The trucks body, paint and chrome were done by the previous owner. The motor runs great! No leaks anywhere. The body and paint are beautiful and turn heads everywhere I go. After dropping the pan off and looking underneath it has that never been rebuilt and all original mileage discoloration inside on the block, pistons, crank and cam.
I am not interested in racing the truck. I do want the engine and compartment to look and sound as good as the outside. I pop the hood on this nice truck and there is this big war dog motor sitting there.
I dont have $6000 to drop in the motor. Is there anything that can be done without alot of machine work?
Thanks
John
Here is what I would do if I was happy with the performance it has now and didnt need a rebuild: Pull the motor and take alternator ps pump fanblade and brackets off. Spray a couple cans of engine brite or oven cleaner on the motor paying close attention not to spray it in the carb or distributor and wash it off. Then spray it down with Dark Ford Blue 500* engine enamel. Paint the brackets semigloss black and reinstall. Put motor back in the truck and change the oil, plugs, wires, dizzy cap, coil, belts, hoses and airfilter... a complete tune up. Buy a set of chrome valve covers and chrome air filter lid and you are set. As for sound maybe some magnaflow or flowmaster mufflers with some long chrome tips. This is about a $300 suggestion depending on muffler shop cost and also reusing your original water pump alternator and ps pump
Take it from experience. When the motor is out you can get way over your head in expenses saying "well it wont cost that much more to do.....this this and that!"
