engine hoist

Just wondering if anyone sees any problem using an engine hoist to hold up the back of a truck (with no bed) to move it around? I put the rear axle under my bronco and now I need to be able to move the truck around. We got it out of the garage by wheeling it around on a jack, which is always fun when the jack starts rolling on your sloped driveway...

but anyway, I don't see anything too dangerous about it, just wanted to make sure I'm not doing something really dumb.

I've done it, but if the wheels get caught in a crack, the whole thing will tip over.

alright, I'll watch for that. It only needs to be moved 15-20ft into the garage, so it shouldn't be too bad.

Be VERY careful. I moved a 2000# lathe that way. Remember to drop the truck, move the hoist, then pick the truck again to get over cracks and bumps. If there is any kind of slope keep the truck from rolling with a come-along AND a safety chain. The engine hoist is made for a straight UP pull. Any sort of torsion or side force can twist it up like a pretzel or spit it out from under the truck in the blink of an eye. If anyone is next to it when that happens they can be seriously injured or killed. Some tow truck services have boom trucks which could come out and move the truck quickly with a lot less hassle for a reasonable fee which is far safer.

Ditto on what Eric said. A friend calls a local wrecker service in for about $25, that's a lot in safety and piece of mind. They even help putting an engine in.
