Black Cam Lobes?

I picked up my new cam today. I opened the box when I got home and all the cam lobes ARE BLACK, not polished WTF?

I guess I'll call the shop in the A.M. to find out what's up with that

Anybody else have that happen?

Don't bother. It's a surface treatment (Parkerizing I think) that holds the oil and helps to break in the lobe to lifter mating surfaces. All new cams have it. It will wear down to a nice polished appearance as you do your initial run in. Make sure you use a high zinc content oil or use a zinc additive.

Thanks, I was hoping it was something like that.
What oil would you recommend?

Check the oil and lube forum but I believe it is recommended to use Diesel engine oil. The cam manufacturers instructions should mention it also.

BTW, It IS called Parkerizing.

Eric is correct I use rottella 15w-40 oil for initial break in and also be sure to put some cam break in lube on each lobe before installing. also you can run other oils but put in a can of GM EOS that will add the zinc too.

The Black is a parkerized finish meant to let the cam lobe spin the lifter in it's bore. No spin = sure death in a few minutes run time for both cam and lifter. So too much lube is as bad as not enough.
