How does the speedometer cable install on my '56? Through the firewall ? Or does the cable stay inside and go under the transmission cover plate with the emergency brake cable?

I have an AOD Automatic. A speedomter shop will custom make a cable if I can figure out how long it should be. Is there anything special I need to do for brackets, etc?
