Tuner Question - 1st Post

OK, I'm looking at picking up an 03 f250 now that prices have come down a fair bit and looking at various tuners. I want something that has got a "kill" setting for track night or the odd street confrontation. Everyone seems to talk up the SCT units but I like the Quadzilla Xzillaraider Race for the fact that it listens to the engine via the sensors. I think that the safety features of reverting back to the stock programming when the oil and coolant temps get too high is a great idea. The only thing that seems to be a negative is the lack of additional transmission programming. What is the general consensus? Could you purchase a stand alone trans tuner with the Xzillaraider? I've already read a post on here where a guy with his SCT overheated the motor while towing up a big hill. As far as I can tell, that would never happen with the Xzillaraider. Thoughts?

xtremexj: Hold on and you will have more advise than you'll know what to do with shortly. Before buying a truck pull the VIN # and one of the techs can run an Oasis report on it to make sure you are getting a good trouble free truck. I would be real leery of the great priced 03. There is probably a reason for the great price. The 03 are great I had one but be careful....

Yeah After I Got It Through One Of The Guys In The Forum I Thought That To But The Inital Shock Was A Little Concerning, Byut I Have Had It In For 2 Turbos And Pcm And A Few Sensors But It Still Runs Good Except For The Mpg 11.5 At Best.

Stroked Out!: If you got the latest turbo with the relief cuts for the vanes you are good to go. As far as your fuel mileage I got 14mpg average with my 03. Good luck

How Can I Tell Which One I Have? Will A Tuner Give Me A Little More Mpg's?

It should say on the Oasis report which one they used. I ran a tuner on my 03 and did notice a bit of mpg increase but you have to keep your foot out of it. I would recommend gauges if you run a tuner. I think SCT is tops right now.. Or the Flashpaq....

SCT all the way and don't look back. Get the livewire if you don't already have gauges. Great unit and holds 4 or 5 tunes. Contact Matt with LIPD for all your SCT questions. 828-606-3263. I think he can put all your concerns to rest as to what the SCT Livewire can and can't do.

Sorry! I'm prejudiced. I only run one tune. I don't really have a reason to run anything different. It's all in educating the right foot and watching your gauges (which you need before any kind of tuner). Good luck with your choice and enjoy!

Well, I've spent a lot of time searching the net today, and it seems that the SCT tunes are making big power while still keeping the cylinder pressures down. How exactly is this done? I'm guessing it has something to do with matching the fuel and timing curves a little better. I have been concerned with the potential of popping a head gasket and it seems with their tunes I shouldn't be.

I would bet that there's more info you could pull up on a search for 'tuners' than you could read in 6 months.

Take Care

Yeah, I've done that and I'm about cross-eyed now. Truth be known, I currently drive a 1st Gen Cummins (1993 to be exact) and need something a little newer. I was raised a Blue Oval boy but could never afford a Powerstroke until now. I do want to make some big power and have it reliable. I am still not ruling out a 2nd Gen Cummins just because of the power potential and reliablity, but I sure would like to get back to my Fords.

Help convince me that I need to come back to Ford and that I can use one of the previously mentioned tuners to put a big smile on my face with a fun and reliable truck.

Not sure you can say 'tuner' and 'reliability' in the same sentence with Ford. Some guys run them with no problems, but ALOT of guys running them DO have problems. Do more reading on the subject.

Good Luck
