hi
i recently bought a 1992 f-150 longbed shortcab 4x4 5speed 302 v8.
having fixed some problems, i still think that the mileage / fuel consumption is way too much.
currently, its about 13,5mpg, but a friend of mine, which runs the same car (but as an automatic and 2wd) has a 16mpg mileage.
currently, i replaced lambda sond, throttle potentiometer, intake and exhaust gaskets. i also had to cut off the egr (it was rusted, but i plugged both ends) and the intake air heatening (also corroded). i have no mufflers anymore, just the 2 cats.
i also cut of power for 2 days to reset the computer.
the car is running great, idles normally at 550-600 rpm.
but consumption did not go down, althought i drove the grandpa style for some time.
shouldn´t a manual geared car like mine consume more less?
what else could i check, what problems may i have overseen?
A 2 wheel drive will always get better MPG then a 4X4 could ever get. My chevy 1500 with a v-6 and 3.73 5-speed will get about 17 if I do not go over 2000 RPMS and it only has 34000 miles on it.
Yep you are right on money 13 MPG . With tuneup and open road trip you may get 15 MPG . It depends on gearing as well . If hilly terrain the 4:10 might get just as good as the 3:55(what I usually get) . But had a 93 company truck it had to have 3:08 rears because you never got over 4 gear it just bogged along. And got bad millage. At least for me.
Theres nothing wrong with your truck, welcome to ford 4x4's, all the engines get about the same gas mileage. If I had known that when I was looking for mine, I woulda gotten a 460 :>

I have a 94 150 king cab 6ft bed 4x2 automatic and I've only goten 13mpg but then again I dont drive like grandpa.
I just purchased the truck and have only ran one tank of gas so far. I still need to do a basic tune up as the truck apears to be well maintained.
Alot of getting good mieage depends on the gearing and driving style. If you keep the rpms around 1800 on the highways seems to be the best mpg for these but then you better be in the SLOW lane. When I drive 75-80 I manage about 10mpg instead of 15 @55
my 1st truck was an f-250 supercab 2wd .I don't know what the rear end was but a farmer had ordered it specially equipted. The 1st 2yrs.I got 13-14 mpg. then 1 time pulling a trailer my milage went UP!! I found if I did 55 I got about17 -18 mpg because of the gearing.
