My 2006 F250 FX4 rear end housing cover is rusted and the paint has peeled off. Nothing else under the body is like this. Brought it to the dealer and they said it was caused by chemicals on the roads (BS). If so why isn't anything else rusted. Has anyone experienced this problem? Might want to check yours out, it's something I guess some of us don't look at often.
Moved from the 6.0L section. If your state is using a liquid solution for road salt it eats everything.
I usually power wash my truck every spring and repaint the chassis with John Deere's soft black. I use a low pressure high volume paint gun to apply the paint straight out of the can.
The rear cover on my '05 ex is doing the same thing, and we do have the brine and salt stuff spread on our roads. I can;t wait for some warmer weather to clean my Ex and wash it good underneath...etc
If you do any towing at all, the rear-end gets so hot it causes the paint to peel off exposing bare metal and then rusting. Even if you don't tow, it will eventually happen due to the thin metal the diff cover is made of not to mention the low volume of gear oil it holds.
Solution, the overpriced Mag-Hytec or similar finned aluminum diff covers which not only have the fins to aid in heat dissipation, but also hold a larger volume of gear oil to keep it from getting so confounded hot.
I suppose it could be a primer/paint issue too, but have always been told it is heat-related.
The stock cover is just crap. That simple. Mine flaked so bad it started to leak. That was during my second year of ownig it. I live in So. CA. so no salt here. I replaced it with another aftermarket stamped steel one, and it has been perfect ever since. Think the factory one is made from poor quality steel, or pretty pure steel that rusts in two seconds.
Plenty of parts under your truck are not even painted. Look at your steering knuckles, and the steering box, drivelines etc. If you take a little time, and paint them now, they have a fighting chance. If not, you will be replacing them due to a rust failure, and not a mechanical one.
I had that same problem with my '03, so far the '06 is fine. I have seen some that are fine and others that are rusty on the road. I can buy what dmgiff is saying about the heat. I did alot of towing with my '03 but have not done much yet with the '06 so I will have to test this theory when I start pulling my trailer around this camping season.
Mines doing the same thing.....It's from the towing for me....No salty roads in SW Florida. I noticed that the 08' models are now using a finned aluminum cover on the SRW models now. I figured I would try to get one of those in a few months, since I'm sure it will be near imnpossible to get one now.
I do tow and thought about it could be the cause. But I thought Ford had everything figured out as far as towing goes. Didn't think the rear end would get that hot. Will buff down and repaint with a heat type paint and see what happens. Might go with the aluminum cover with the fins. Thanks for replies from all.
Mine was rusty within the first year of ownership. Truck is now three years old and 30,000 miles - some from towing. The cover is a piece of crap and the paint is crappier still. Why can't Ford put decent paint on ALL the under truck parts? Toyota may not be looked at by some as the truck to own, but Toyota knows how to paint the underside to look new for many years. I heard the argument that "don't worry about it, they are just trucks", but then Ford should charge accordingly. They are getting as pricey as luxury cars. The damn trucks aren't cheap.... but the paint is.
I'll bet trying to score one of the '08 covers from Ford will be more expensive than any aftermarket cover. Although, as I say that, I'm just plain baffled by how expensive the aftermarket covers are too! I mean how expensive can casting aluminum be? I guess it's demand driven like other things.
I just got a quote from willie at discountfordparts@y2kford.com for 124 bucks for the cover and he said he could get it. Where is the best place to get an aftermarket cover for cheap?
