Anyone know where
I've got the hook up for some lights and I want to get a lightbar like that and have about 4 lights or so.
Although, I have a few questions.
How hard is it to hook up a lightbar? To drill it in (I you've gotta) and then to attach the lights and hook them up to the buttons and all? I have no experience with that kind of thing.
As well, is it a wise idea to put one on since it's possible to hit it on low overhangs?
I think lightbars are rainbow, but whatever. If you 'wheel in conditions where you REALLY need it, great. But most people put them on for looks. You'll need to wire them up w/several relays, and you can switch them however you choose; one switch for all, one switch for each, etc.
If you're gonna do it make sure your alternator can actually power all those lights at idle, the amp draw can add up quick. Unless of course you wanna be a poser like most people and just put it up for looks.
And yeah, it'll catch low-hanging branches on the trail.
I did have problems with the wiring getting hot and had several shorts due to running them through the doors instead of cutting a hole in the roof. It was kind of more trouble than it was worth.
I also had a huge shadow directly in front of the truck because I didn't have any lights on a bumper lightbar. That's really the best place to have them. I would go with hidden lights in the grille now.
My 83 had a 3" Rancho lift with 33" BFG's and I needed 7 feet of clearance with the lights. It shut me out of a few parking garages.
Also, I found out you have to have them covered in California if your driving there (not in Arizona though). And a lot of people accidently turn them on and melt the covers to the lights.
And the wiring for those lights did keep someone from stealing my truck or stereo once. They couldn't get throught the wiring for the switches to my alarm brain to shut it off so they gave up. 10 other cars got hit that day in the parking lot and had their alarms thrown in the street. I was the only one who didn't have anything stolen. Guess the nightmare wiring was good for something!
