Guage Swap

Ok so ive found a instrument cluster with a tach (my current one dosnt have one) on ebay....

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...8217076&rd=1,1

Looks to be in pretty good shape. I know im gonna have to get the odometer reset but I called my Ford dealer and they said they could do it no problem. My question is what all has to be done as far as wiring to get the tach hooked up? Also is there anything else that will need to be done to get it working? Thanks

Richie

I have purchased several over the years for my pickup. It doesn't say if it is for a 6cyl or 8cyl. I don't know if that matters? It does say unleaded fuel only so it must be from a Gas engine truck.

On my 87 I didn't have to do anything but swap the clusters and everything worked fine. I did get a couple clusters from 2wd trucks and had to add bulbs for the 4x4 and 4wd lights, it is good to check all that before you have everything put back together. It was a pain in the neck changing the odometer on mine.

On mine I think it is much easier to take the shift indicator out of the cluster and let it hang there while you remove the cluster for cleaning or replacement.

You are stuck I take it its a F150 The 96 Unless it a real late 95 is on its own with ODB II as well as brake wiring changes . 94-95 same if air bag and 92 93 . As for Odom just reuse yours I did on my 93 when I put the tach dash in it. So just Make sure setup is for 96. There are many posts on this. Some fixes are easy . But from what Ive read the 96 is hard to swap to other year . Good luck on search. IF you have right year its a plug and play

If your screen name is any indication your going to need a '96 only. 1996 is the stand alone year you can use a '95 but you will have to disconnect the ABS light as it will stay on if you don't. I would wait and buy a cluster you can actually look at and handle you make sure it's an actual '96. As for the odometer all you have to do is take your PSOM (the middle section) and put it in the new cluster. There are full instructions in the article section of this site.

If your truck is indeed a 1996 do not buy one from 1993. You will most likely have battery charging problems and ABS problems. If you have a 1996 truck you must buy a 1996 cluster (unless you want to mess with the wiring harness). Also you do not need a dealer to transfer your milage over. As long as you take out the old speedometer from your old cluster and transplant it to the new cluster your milage will stay the same. The procedure is outlined in this article:
