I recently purchased a 98 f150 ext cab, 4.6. It had a rebuilt transmission in it just out of warranty. Shifts fine. The other day, the overdrive light starts flashing. I took it to my trans. guy and the code is for 2-3 shift error. There is no noticable shift problem and he even drove it. The trans was replaced in another state, but the work order showed same codes. My guy says no need to replace it if its working fine, but cant find a problem. Anyone had similar code message and how do you fix it.
I had similar codes around 130k miles. I forgot of it was 1-2 or 2-3 shift but am pretty sure it was also 2-3. Also had indicator light blink on the OD lever.
My friend who worked on Ford before helped me fix it. I remember he took the valve body off and replaced an 'accumulator'? piston seal. It was indeed faulty / cracked upon inspection! He claimed that this seal actually was a recall on some Fords! He also replaced the shift solenoid for that shift that came up in the code. That fixed the problem. My friend had asked his former pals at the ford truck shop to read code and give advice. That is what they had recommended. I think the solenoid might have been overkill, but we thought we mightaswell. The trans fluid was the most expensive part in the fix!
I HAD a symptom, not only the code. The truck would slip shifting up. It was very slight and only when the truck was cold. It took the computer a while to catch up, I sure felt it much earlier, before the code came up.
I would assume that on your transmission, the rebuild had fixed that piston rubber part. I would also assume that nothing should be wrong with the solenoids, otherwise you'd feel something.
My advice? Keep driving and keep an ear on the shifting. If nothing comes up and code doesn't return, I wouldn't worry.
Thanks so much for the info. I was beginning to think no one was going to respond. Now I can communicate that to my trans guy. The light blinks on an intermitent basis, just enough to be annoying. According to the work order for the new transmission, it was doing that same thing when the guy paid for a transmission overhaul at $1400.00
My guy said that probably wasn't necessary. I guess dude got taken.
