swapping a 96 302 into a 89, will it work?

I was wondering if anyone knew if i could swap a 1996 302 into what was originally a 1989 302? does anyone know if the wiring harness is compatible and what if any other changes i will need to make? I really need some help so please give any advice you have!

The wiring harnesses are definitely not compatible. The 96 is mass air and ODB-II and the 89 is speed density and OBD-I. If you just swap the engines you should be OK though.

Just out of curiosity, when you say "just the engine" do you mean without the MAF injector harness thereby converting the newer engine to SD? It seems like the MAF harness and ECM should work.

Transmission type might possibly be an issue with the doner ECM though, I believe.

Right - unless you transplant *everything* - PCM, all the wiring, the exhaust tapped for the 3 O2 sensors, then the engine will have to be speed density. He'll need the throttle body, MAP, and any other SD-specific sensors/parts that I'm not thinking of right now.

Edit - like the OBD-II connector under the dash.

Basically, because the 96 is OBD-II, it becomes a nightmare wiring project.

i dont know yet if the 96 engine was hooked to an automatic or a manual but the tranny in the truck is a 5 speed. and when you say "just the engine" what does "just the engine" consist of? and is there any way i could run the obd II to the cab? and is there any way i could use the mass air flow? instead of speed density?

"just the engine" means the engine block and the accessories. As I said, some of the sensors won't swap over.

You could run OBD-II and mass air, but as I said, it will be a nightmare. I hope you are a wiz at reading electrical diagrams, because you will know them all by heart by the time you're done.

i mean my first vehichle was a 1968 c-20 and i put a new motor in that all by myself but ive never done anything complicated or fuel injected so i was looking for a direction to start. if i had all the components off of the 96 engine could i do a complete swap of everything? and have the wiring not be as bad or do you think it would be worse trying to transplant everything?

The 96 engine will function just fine on the 89 computer and wiring, while being noticably more powerful. All you need is the longblock, basically the engine with the intake and accessories removed. Put that in the truck, and mount the 89 intake, wiring and accessories. You'll need to use the 89 distributor as well, but change to a steel drive gear to match the 96 roller cam.

do you happen to know how much the steel drive gear would cost?

Your engine block alone will work fine . The PCM wiring is way different on older truck. If you want MAF you'll have to get harness kit (or make one) as well as older 94-95 ECM w/maf to run it. The ODB-II has alot more sensors . ie the 94 -95 only has one o2 on all the setups I've worked on. On NON ODB II all sensors are in same spots but one and it move to the MAF airbox.

If the 96 motor comes with the distributor, pull the drive gear off it.

Maybe you can get just the wiring harness from the MAF conversion kit from Ford. I'm pretty sure you can get it separately.

I did the MAF conversion on my 87' and it basically swaps the ECM to OBDII from a 96(I think)mustang. The overlay harness is what adapts it to work with the old parts and new MAF sensor from the kit. If you already have the sensor and ECM all you should need is the right harness. The kit allows for only 1 o2 sensor.

The MAF conversion kits use an 89-93 5.0 mustang computer...it is not OBD-II.

i think that im going to keep the original engine and get it rebuilt and use the 96 for a project vehicle i have been wanting to make a fully exo caged bronco or maybe throw it in a bronco II or a ranger that would be nice. would it cost more to get the orginal engine rebuilt or go ahead and do the swap?
