Ranger fuel problem
I have the dreaded 2.9L shutter while driving problem. Many people have had this problem and I think I found the potential cause. There is an air valve canister between the gas tank and the fuel pump. I guess the idea is to remove air bubbles from the fuel lines before they get to the engine, and it has a paper filter element in it. This unit is not discussed in any book, it was a mystery for a long time until a guy at checker told me what it was. I removed the item, replaced the filter with one from checker and put it back in place. I haven't tested it yet but I'm hopeful that this will solve the chugging problem because the paper filter element was completely clogged and it's obvious I was getting air pockets in the fuel line.
