1997 PSD 229K miles Ok so when driving around 1000-1500 rpms its running rough almost feels liek a gas motor that is missing or only hitting on a few cylinders. It only has P0603 code which says "keep alive Memory (kam) error". no other codes. So does anyone have any idea what i should try? Filter was changed around 7K ago or so, oil about 2K, was on half of a tank of the fuel that was from last week. CPS, TPS, injector what could it be? If im running around 2K rpms runs great.
OK i have more to add. I unhooked my chip that plugs into the ICP. drove about 2 miles and the truck died on me at the stop light. Fininally after dieing lots of time limped it into a parking lot. then in the parking lot it died once more. after that it started up and ran just liek it was. It through an icp sensor code so checked the connection and it was fine, then cleared the code. Any ideas whats going on? there is another post i have been watching about the IPR going bad could that be causing this
Well when was the last time you changed the CPS. I had similar symptoms, the strength of the CPS signal can cause those types of issues. I recommend the blue CPS from international. Next question is was it a progressive onset of running rough or overnight. Is it ever rough at idle. is it a manual tranny. It doesn't sound like a IPR or ICP but I could be wrong.
I havent ever changed the CPS out myself since i have had the truck. Sounds liek a good place to start. Idles rougher when warmed up, well kind of a surge idle, jumping a few rmps. Its a automatic.
THe fact that it died and then started again normally makes me think that it is a CPS mine went bad, it started out by loosing power and running rough some times, then it would die occassionally but start back up with no problem, it never through a code so I really replace it on blind faith from this site and the problem was solved. So then I bought a second CPS for a spare. Good luck.
CPS= Cam Position Semsor
IPR= Injection Pressure regulator
ICP= Injection Control Pressure sensor
The CPS is one of the tempermental sensors on the truck. It's on the front of the engine about 10 o'clock on the harmonis balancer. You should buy one and keep it in the glove box along with a 10mm socket. IT will save you from walking home. eBay is the cheapest place to get one ~$50. If wait untill an emergency arises you'll spend way over $100. Be sure it's not aftermarket, Ford or International only. Click on the links in my signature for more info.
so far i have not has trouble with mine how long do they usely last.
LONGIVITY IS SCATTERED, my oem lasted 125,000miles, others here have gone 200,000+ meanwhile I think a few members here have only gotten like 30,000 out of them.
International is the best place to get them, thier the exact same one ford sells except ford puts it in thier bag and marks up the price. Where I am at I was quoted like $320 or something at Napa, assuming ford would be more, I paid $150'sh at international. Canadian funds of corse.
Not sure if this is even close to your problem, but i was having similar problem with my 95 PSD except for the dying out part, mine never died out, but other then that similar problem.
They found my exhaust tube from the turbo was chocked up big time, they cleaned it out, runs like bad bam a jama again now, especially with the superchip.
