i have an 89 bronco 5.0 302 efi. can any body tell me what happens if my timing chain is shot? or if it is jumping links? when i try to accelerate i hear a loud clicking from the engine. it isnt a wire sortening out, it is a mechanical sound. it only does it when i push it alittle. any ideas would be great.
Take the distributor cap off & grab a breaker bar with a socket for the crankshaft bolt.
Now while you turn the engine one direction ,observe the rotor turning.Once it stars turning >>>>Stop<<<
Now....Watch very closely when you turn the engine the OTHER direction > Observe How many degrees of turn the breaker bar takes before the rotor turns again.
If everything is okay, the rotor Should turn RIGHT AWAY. If you turn the bar about 10-15-20 degrees or so,the timing chain is worn out and will cause noise as well as bad engine performance.
If your timing chain actually JUMPED a link (not just worn), you would know it. You would barely be able to start it, if it started at all. You wouldn't be driving it.
