i tell ya what i'd do personally is get a 400 crank and pistons, the rods interchange so thats not a problem, shoot worst come to worst you can pick up a fresh crank from advance auto for around 180 bucks and get a set of those dern zero deck pistons from tim and a cam around 265 advertised and a little bit of bowl work with an aftermarket intake and a 650-750 on it and a set of ole cheap headers with have the ole horse actin like a fresh born colt
yep- gotta dump the m and go with the 400. Was reading a ford performance book lately and while it have some homage to the 400 the 351m was considered a joke let alone a performance engine.
A 400 crank is a simple and inexpensive update and you will need pistons anyway. Tim at TMI (sponser)- has the only good quench piston made for the 400 and it's competitive at 180 or so for the set. He also carries cranks. Or you can get one of those local and have it machined.
With his pistons you will want to get a more aggressive cam that will pull stumps and give great hwy performance on pump. Cam selection will be absolutely critical with those pistons and tim has the answers. Also a weiand or performer intake and 600 cfm performer carb (my choice- some like having to screw with holleys). 3 key timing chain that will allow you to set it straight up.
With that your looking at well over 300hp and 430+ft lbs. And better mileage than you had stock- depending on cam. Then roller rockers and other goodies ifn you got the $.
You will kick some appreciable hiney with this honey of a motor. search for builds and have at it...tons of info.
