your thoughts on this 460 build
79 Bronco. Daily driver/trail truck. Must pass local sniffer/presence of cat converter. Will have 4" lift, 33s, 3.55gears, low gear kit in tranny. would also like to take on road trips at any time I see fit. 87 octane.
It's getting bored to .030, and heads redone to stock, but with bronze guides and hardened exhaust seats.
Pistons are 9:1 (with 92 cc chambers) coated hypereutectics. I'll try to use piston work or head gasket changes to not go over 9:1 by much, if at all. Exhaust will be manifolds/dual pipes & cats.
Intake will have to be selected to go with the cam, which I have 4 to choose from, that I am considering. All are Comp Cams.
255DEH. 110 LSA, .465/.495, 203/216 @ .050
265DEH. 110 LSA, .484/.510, 211/223 @ .050
XE 4x4 256. 111 LSA, .514/.514, 210/218 @ .050
XE 4x4 262. 111 LSA, .514/.524, 218/226 @ .050
If none of these will work with the CR to run 87 octane and pass the pipe sniffer, I can lower CR with piston or chamber work.
I figure the Performer would be the best intake for any of the cams, and that the RPM would be overkill.
I was also considering getting the EGR and possibly other emissions systems intact and operating. Although they aren't checked, maybe it'll aid in sniffer quality? The only checks I have to have is a visual on the cat to make sure it's there, and the tube in the pipe.
any other thoughts, suggestions?
Oh. I have on hand a 600 vac sec holley, and 2 ford 4350s. any thoughts on using a 4350, since the holley is *supposed* to be for the mustang (even though I can always get another for it). Or do they belong in the trash can?
The torque converter would be the next thing to pick to match final engine combination. TCI truckmaster, stock, or little higher than stock stall?
Would this get pretty comparable mileage to a mostly stock 351M/400 build?
Torque is all even at 3k (450), but the smaller cams are about 35 higher (at 2K) and FLAT below 3k, except the 262XE, which is 15-20 lower at 2k. At peak HP, torque is between 375-400 for all 4 cams.
The XE 256 4x4 falls off in torque and power the fastest/soonest.
265 DEH has poorer torque band below 3K, but highest power over 4K
I think I can eliminate those 2.
The 262XE doesn't have as broad of a torque band as the 255DEH, but the hp is nearly 50 hp higher at 5500.
I'm guessing that the 255DEH is best, IF it'll work with the rest of the combo/requirements, for daily driving and trail romping. I don't intend to take it through big mud bogs, as i'll only have 33s on it, but I bet the characteristics will be fine for whatever the truck can physically handle off-road, yes?
