I have a 2002 7.3 that smokes. Heres what happens:
It smokes when I start it, blueish/white. Little less if I Plug it in, but still will clear a neighborhood.
I pulled a trailer and about 50 miles into the haul, it would smoke when Ideling, and act as if it were missing. I also have added 3 quarts of oil in just over a month.
Now that I am home and it set over night it just smoked when I started it. When it warmed up it ran like a champ.
Can anyone help me.
The dealer replaced the head gaskets prior to me purchaseing it. it does not appear to have and oil on the coolant res or water in the oil. I dont know about the fuel... how do i check that.
On the driversside valve cover ther is a doghouse looking vent cover. It is pplumbed into the air intake. (right in the abs connector from the accordian S shaped tube to the reducing type tube that goes into the turbo) If you remove the S shaped accordian hose you can see where the ccv vents into the housing. Make sure it is clear and free from occlusion. If it is clogged it will cause the symptoms you describe. If the previous owner did a CCV mod then the dog house will vent probably somewhere under the truck. If it is clogged it will be the same problems
So, I checked the CCV and found there was a fair amount of oil in the air intake hose and a very lose connection on the air cleaner tube where it connects to the turbo. I did not see any obstructions in the hose to the CCV. it appears I may need to change the seals between the CCV and the valve cover though. I also noticed there are a red and green vacuum lines that ran to a sensor. are those related to the CCV?
