Im having a issue but im not sure where to look. I have recently noticed that my 90 f150 has been shifting rougher that usual lately. It shifts really rough under accerleration and deceleration. I really noticed that when im pulling to a stop sometimes the tranny wont down shift from second to first, and it will pull the rpm's down to the point of where the truck almost dies, then it will shift and the rpms come back up to normal. I bought the truck about 4 months ago from a buddie of mine. I noticed right off the bat that the tranny was shifting out of second gear way to fast, and sometimes when i mash the pedal it wont kick back down into second, it just pushes third gear. It usually shifts out of second around 25-30 mph, and if i mash the pedal when im climbing a hill it will kick down, but if im on level ground it wont. today after driving the truck for about 5-6 miles, i checked my tranny fluid and it was a little low (just below cross hatched section). I moved my truck maybe 10 feet to a level spot to put some more fluid in, but when i pulled the dip stick again, it showed that the fluid was fine (i also noticed some small bubbles). The guy I bought it from worked at a jiffy lube and he said he had purged the tranny and refilled it. Im just wondering if there is some gunk that was moved around in there. sorry to be so long winded, this is a very aggrivating problem. any help would be much appreciated. thanks!!

 

The tranny fliud level should be checked at operating temperature with the engine running... just in case you don't know. If the tranny shifts too early you may need to adjust the TV cable. The adjuster is on the throttle body bracket, pry up the clip and pull it out to increae shift rpm and force. Be careful, it's spring loaded and minute adjustments make a big difference.
