Got a 95 F-150 w/ E4OD. I want to disable the locking mechanism on the transmission selector so that you dont have to "depress" the brake to shift out of park. I know its a safety thing, but my dad did this in his 98 Silverado, and it just makes everything easier with trailers and such, and my family has had no issues with safety on the matter. Any ideas? Thanks
I don't have an answer for you, but I have a question. How can it be "EASIER" for trailers and such that you don't have your foot on the break when you are going from PARK to REVERSE or DRIVE? I personally would rather not have the transmission lunging into reverse and drive. Oh well, good luck to you. Later... Mike....
ha ha, I expected this answer, and I was trying really hard not to make people think I was wreckless or stupid... The history is that my 91 F-150 did not have the lock, and I am still in the habit of starting the truck, and dropping right to drive and rolling away, never touching the brake. Its really nothing more than a convience thing. I trust myself to be smart enough with it, as the 91 worked great for me for the years.
As for trailers, when you are the only one out there, trying to hitch the trailer, and you are getting in and out, it makes the whole process easier without this safety lock. Don't ask me why, its just the habits that I have formed, and they have served me well over the years.
ahhh... I can see your mental images now, with the door closed and me reaching in through the window to shift the truck into drive with no one inside. Then shifting to neutral to slow down, and maybe slamming into reverse for braking, and then finally park with a huge clank, and maybe a busted trasnmission. that would be a sight, but no, that is not me.
Like I said, hard to explain, just a personality thing for me and my dad... The '85 and '91 didn't have it, just wondering if anyone has ever done this to a '92-'96. Sorry for the long winded answer, but didn't want you all to think I'm nuts... at least not with the truck
Hah, at first I did think "uh oh" but realized I guess it would be kind of convenient... but also unnecessary. I'm sure you could be as smart as possible with this mod but it would just make me nervous that a kid or animal might bump the shifter into reverse while I'm in the mini mart and watch my truck back up into a gas pump outside. Ehh, to each his own though. Sorry, I don't know how to do this but, I would think that a good place to start would be to grab a flashlight and look up under the dash at the break pedal linkage, I would think that the safety would be right there under the dash somewhere as opposed to being in the engine compartment or in the drivetrain somewhere (duhh). Seems like an easy enough thing to figure out. Good luck!
a buddy of mine just came out of the caveman era and upgraded from a 68 F250 4 speed to a 04 F350 automatic.
i drove it home for him.
he got in the truck, and started cursing that it would not go into gear. before i could get from the garage to the truck, he grabbed the shifter, and yanked it down, snapping the brake interlock off/ steering wheel lock. it now will go into gear without stepping on the brakes, and you can turn the wheel with the key out of the ignition. .
no guarantees this will work, and do it at your own risk.
