emissions, emissions, emissions....

my 1980 bronco has no smog pump or cat on it. it is going to need to pass an emissions test in the near future. is this something an at home learning mechanic like myself can do? or should i take it to the shop? i have no experience in exhaust systems, but it seems like it would be pretty easy to throw a cat on there. i have access to all of the right tools. also, if i do take it to the shop, how much should i expect to pay? also why would somebody take them off? sounds ridiculous to me.
thx for your input

Chances are is that you are going to have to weld the cat back on there. If you know how to weld this will not be a problem, but if you are like me and have no clue how to weld, take it to a exhaust shop. There might be a slim chance that the cat can bolt in, but this is unlikely, it depends on how the previous owner took it off. If I was you I would take it to a shop that knows your local emmission laws and have them give it a look over before you do any work. There may be many other emmission things missing.
A lot of people take cats off because 1. they might have gone bad and this is a cheaper fix 2. By taking the cat off you usually get a better exhaust note. or 3. Some people think that it gives them better performance, which might be true with the old cats that came on your Bronco, but not with the new aftermarket cats you can put on now. Hope this helps

less backpressure = more HP
I don't belive the smog pump would takes much HP to run.. Especially under low rpm.. but hey you could probably get 10HP out of the 2.

(and it *does* sound better..)

I pulled the smog pump off my '88 F-150 years ago, and the result wasn't much different in performance, but it sure sounded better. There wasn't the funny sound of the smog pump, plus I was aiming for a clean, uncluttered underhood area. There were no emissions, so that wasn't a problem. I did remove the entire exhaust and installed a complete Hooker true dual exhaust setup, including headers. Now that made a power difference! On my Bronco, I plan on having the 2-cat setup cut off and a collector for a single high-flow cat installed so I can bolt the high-flow cat right up. Cat's have come a long way, so I aim to keep that on.

To anyone whom I may have affended with my previos post...

I opolige if I offended anyone here with my post it was a half harted jest but not as much as it should have been. Unfortunatly there is laws/ rules out there that we have to obide by that we may not agree with. I reside in TN were there is no inspection as of yet but have lived in states that inforce them harshly I hope my post was not taken seriacly and will be disregarded for we as adults, Bronco owners, and Christians need to set good examples and give good sound advise... As for my laps I do apoligize..
