'87 6.9 diesel starting problems
I have an 87 6.9 diesel and it starts great when it's cold or hot but it won't start if it sits for more than a week without being run. It will start, run for about 2 seconds then dies. I know it is running out of fuel because of an air leak, but I don't know where it could be coming from. There is no fuel in the crankcase oil. The valve on the fuel filter housing squirts a good stream of fuel. Any suggestion on where the problem is? Some guys I work with use to have 87 6.9 diesels in their work trucks and it was a problem with all of them. The mechanic said he put a check valve in the fuel line and that cleared it up. Would that work? And if so, where would I put one? or get one? Thanks, Bob

your return lines are letting air in, letting the fuel filter drain back to the tank when it sits. there are a few remedies for this problem. one is to replace the return lines. another is to eliminate the line that goes from the front injector to the fuel filter head if it is there.

you can get a return line kit from any major parts store or from an international truck dealer. it will be allot cheaper than from ford. i think the kit is between $45 and $65.
