Timing light help

I just bought at timing light and i'm thinking it might be broken, but I want to make sure it's not me thats broken before i take it back. I got the Actron CP7527, connected the pos term to the battery pos and the neg to the engine block as the manual says but also tried it to the neg terminal on the battery. I put the inductive clamp on the #1 spark plug wire. It says you can hold the power button to get the lamp to come on and stay on or it will strobe with the #1 plug. Either way I can't get the dang thing to come on. Does anyone know of something i'm missing here, or does it sound like this thing is broke?

Some lights have a trigger you squeeze but sit it sounds like you need to return yours.

I'm pretty sure i disconnected the right plug. It came off a harness with three wires in it. it is one wire in a grey square plastic plug going into another grey square plastic socket which has one wire going out of it to what looks like a small one terminal capacitor. The harness with three wires seemed to break off a 6 or so wire harness that came from the distributor. The plug was located just to the right of the engine in the back

Sounds like you are there. When you get your light working be sure to warm up engine good. Mine likes between 11-12 btdc after timing set replacement.

Put the inductive pickup on your coil wire just in case the #1 wire is bad. If no light there, trade her in.

Excellent! I still use an ancient unit I purchased back in 1985 that has a dial in spark advance on it. Sometimes it is the only way to see the timing marks properly. It still seems to be calibrated and working after all these years.

If your new timing light uses a ferrite core in the inductive pickup, be careful not to
drop it because the core can crack and make the light useless. Usually there is a
warning in the instructions. That may have been what happened with the first one.
