I'm looking at buying some tires for my '02 Edge 2wd. Stock are 235/75/R15. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have any problem with going to a 30x9.5, but what about 31x10.5? Any concerns with rubbing here? It's a 3.0L 5sp. I'm not sure what the gearing is. It runs at about 2,400rpm @ 100km/h 65 mph. Would I be labouring the truck on the highway with 31s? I'd rather not mess with the suspension to get needed clearance. I'd just like to know before hand rather than chewing up my fenders.
Also any recommendations on tires? I'm looking at a more aggresive tread pattern than I currently have (goodyear wrangler rts) I'm leaning towards the bfg ta ko's, but would like to have some others to compare to.
I found it just wasnt worth it. I went to 255/70/16 from 235/70/16. Cosmetically, it was a wash at best and my acceleration was noticeably worse and I needed brakes more frequently. I went back to stock, and am happy. Laboring on the highway I don't think will be an issue, laboring off the line will be. And if you tow, your gearing will be negatively affected, which I guess is what made ine worse off the line.
Yes, 31/10.50's will fit without a problem, I've run 31's on 4 cylinder jeeps before and my 96 ranger, I have 32's on my ranger now. I've never had a problem out of them, didn't hurt my power either, but can't speak for the 3.0, it's a slug with or without larger tires hee hee. I have had 4:10 gears all the vehicles that I've run larger tires, I would check my gearing as the 3.0 struggles enough just to move stock tires ha ha, I' sorry, I just can't resist the 3.0 jokes, it's a good engine, just no speed demon.
Your 3.0 will be an even bigger dog with larger tires. Then again I do believe my dads ranger came stock with 255/70/16's and his has the 3.0 with a 5spd, and its a horrible dog. Our 4.0 had 31's on it, and 3.27 gears, and i could notice a power loss. So you will most likely notice it, and if not having enough power is the kind of thing that drives you crazy, then i'd probably stick with the stock tires.
I will say this though...The first owner of our ranger put some 31's on it, and when i got the truck those were nearly worn out. So i put the stock 235's on it, and i kicked myself in the but every day after that because of how they looked. They were just way too small. After those came close to getting worn out, we went and got some more 31's. Good tire to compare to a BFG all terrain is the Bridgstone Dueler A/T REVO. They are actually a little better tire, but the BFG a/t is a little more agressive looking.

I totally agree!! Always stay with the stock sized tires, unless you change the dif. ratios to compensate for larger tires!! The only exception to this rule is with a GM truck, that you just look at (doesn't run).
I don't know how everbody experiences these big power looses, I don't notice any difference. It actually helped my 4 cylinder jeep with the 4:10's, it had 225's and would rev out to quick, with the 31's it felt about right. 255'S are about 31" tall, just not quit as wide. On my ranger, I went from 245 to 265, runs like it allways has, except the speedo is off just a touch, I can fix it with my bama, just have never done it. The 3.0 must be a real dog if you can't even go up a tire size without killing it, now I see why I won't own a 3.0, I'ld rather have the 4 cylinder. I put 245's on my 01 ranger, it was the 4 banger with 3:73 gears and 5-speed, it did fine. Here in northern Ohio, it's pretty flat, maybe if I lived in the hills it might make a difference. I wheel in W,Va and my 32's do a fine job down there in the mountains. Thats the problem with asking questions on a forum, everyone has an opinion and there like buttholes, they all stink. Just do what you want to do, you'll allways find someone to agree and disagree, so in the end, it's still up to you and what you want, go for it.
wendell, i think it mostly has to do with the gear ratio. 4.10 is a pretty good gear ratio for 31's. I think most people notice the power loss because they have the 3.27's like i did, or even worse, the 3.08.
Alright guys I appreciate the advice. Anybnody try General Grabber AT2's? I've read some reviews on tirerack and they sound pretty good. They're also a fraction of the cost of the BFGS.
As for the truck being a dog. It's a dependable one That engine is bullet proof. Besides I bought a truck for the fact that it's a truck, not to have outstanding 1/4 mile times.
Thanks for the info, would love to know if anyone's tried the Generals though
