I had the front end of my 02 explorer jacked up off the ground to change brake pads and while doing so I rotated the front tire and noticed that the front axle was turning.
This vehicle has push button 4 wheel drive, 4x4 auto which , it was in when the vehicle was off the ground and 4x4 lock and 4x4 low.
I was always under the impression that there was no drive to the front end axles unless the computer sensed there was 4wheel drive needed or I was in 4x4 lock or 4x4 low. Is this correct or is there always drive to the front end when you are in 4x4 auto?
When you rotated the tire, the axle turned, which turned the differential, which then turned the opposite axle. Not through the 4x4 but through the front end.
