Is there a trick to removing the column cover...one screw on the bottom... on an 84 F-150 column ? Trying to lube the ignition rod..How does the shift indicator release ?...Thanks again...Jv
The rod doesn't need lubing. The ignition switch is above the column shroud and is visible. The main wiring loom has a plug which feeds to the switch.
The actuating rod is straight with two J like ends. One goes to the key lock actuator, the other to the switch. If you have a binding problem, it's caused from wear, not from being dry. I believe the steering wheel has to come off for access to all the parts.

NumberDummy is right about he actuator rod.
There is only one screw but four plastic snaps that secure the column cover to itself.
The shift quadrant indicator cable looks like a mini speedometer cable. There is a brittle sleeve with a nylon cord inside secured with an adjusting screw to the column selector. Be very very careful when moving this around because if you break the outer sleeve away from the indicator, the indicator will not work. The indicator with needle and cable is mounted to the instrument cluster by two screws and may be removed if desired independently from the cluster.
