I'm going on a fishing trip on the 8th of March. I'll be towing my 10000# fifthwheel over the mountain Going from 3700 ft to app. 10500ft at the pass and back down to 3000ft. Trip is about 3.5 hrs. weather will be lows in the 20's to teens and highs maybe 50..My questions is do you think I'll be ok with the 10-30 Motocraft I just put in 500 miles ago. Its going to stay pretty cool here for a couple more months and I hate to go to 15-40.. thanks for the input.
Honestly from what I know and have read on this forum over the years, you should change your oil to a good Diesel rated brand at 15w-40. 10w-30 is not an option in these engines in my experience. This engine shears the oil down very quickly and before you know it youll be running a 10w-20 or worse......bad ju ju.
If you are indeed worried about it being cold and the cold "startability" with the 15w-40, get a Diesel rated 5w-40 for the colder times of the year.
I think your fine with the 10W-30, Ive been towing with it all winter. Leave it in and change it out when it starts getting warm. Im also not going to put more than 5,000 miles on a 10w-30 though because of the way these motors shear there oil. Since youve only got 500 miles on yours, Im sure you'll be fine. Definatly not worth changing for one trip. I sometimes wonder if the 15W-40 is a little to thick for these 6.0s with all there crazy plumbing. I feel more safe running a little thinner untill it gets real warm out.
I think you should be fine running a 10w30. Just change it when you get back. I run Mobil Devlac 1 5w40 year round. This oil is a little pricey but, i like the piece of mind i have, and my oil analysis comes back looking good. Remember every 6.0 has its own personality, and it may take a couple oil reports to figure yours out.
Look in your owners manual it clearly states NOT to run 10w30 over 30 degrees F when towing. I would much rather have the protection of 40 when towing .
i have been running rotella 15w-40 in my 2006 since it was new, will it be ok if i switch to rotella 5w-40 synthetic when the outside temps are ranging from 50-85 degrees? is this oil ok to use when towing a 10000lb trailer?
I really think its the ??-40w that is whats inportant. Its been said that this engine shears oil. Which pretty means a 30w will shear faster. I'm not hip on oil but thats how i take it anyway.
