It seems that every time I go on the hunt for a new truck...I get bigger and better. First my old Bronco, then my F150...and tomorrow, I am going to look at a 2001 F350SD Lariat, 4x4 Supercab, long bed, diesel (7.x liter), with about 110k miles on it.
Anything I should know to look for that is a known issue with this model? I know to look for the usual things for wear and tear, squeaks, grinds, rattles etc. But what about those things are are known problems that if I can, check it out to make sure I won't end up spending a bundle to get fixed 6 months later.
The car fax report is pulled up upon request when I get there. That way I know that it wasn't altered or anything. The asking price is 21k. What I am looking for is anything that may not be listed such as for the F150, it was known that certain years, had lousy windshield seals and water would leak in behind the main fuse box and cause all sorts of issues. Or the IAC was a known failure point for a smooth idle. Stuff like that. The things that are found here, but not on any Ford notice site, recalls, etc. Right now we are having a blizzard where I live but I plan on going out anyway. I want to have the truck when I go to work on Monday.
The only issue with the 7.3L engine is the CPS. Carry a spare and a wrench, it's a 10 minute job to replace it. Otherwise, it's a great truck and a great engine.
All Superduties suffer to an extent from inferior front hub engineering, inferior ball joints and under-engineered front brakes. You can fix those by following the advice of the members here.
Well I went to look at the 2001, and drove it for about 1 mile, stopped in a parking lot to do a walk around and there was a fuel leak coming from the engine dripping all over the ground. Back it goes. Then I checked out a 99 with 110K miles, ran like a dream. Plenty of power. Runs tight and smooth. Just need to get better tires. I hate the dealers cheap garbage they put on the trucks. So I bought it. $13K. Just couldnt resist. It is the Lariat with the 7.3 PSD. Full 4 doors, full length bed. Just need to get a brake controller.
WOOT!!! I finally got my BAV!! (For those who don't know...BIG *** VEHICLE)
Now going to pickup the 9000lbs of hay doesn't have to be done 3 trips. hehe
