Has anyone ever replaced the front half shafts in a 95 or later Explorer? One of the CV joints is just starting to wear out and is going to have to be replaced in the next few months. I have looked at the procedure in the Hayes manual, and it describes the seperating the the lower control arm. Do you have to do this step or can you leave it attached? Also, how difficult of a repair is this?
I haven't done one on that model/year, but I've done them on other vehicles. Typically, you need to remove "something" on the outside (control arm, ball joint, etc.) to swing the hub/rotor assembly, etc. out of the way so you can pull the shaft out of the tranny/diff, etc.
So, I would say that unless someone else here chimes in with a different shortcut, go with what the manual says.
Oh, and by the way, plan on the better part of a day if you're doing both sides. Just one side, 1/2-3/4 of a day.
In terms of difficulty, unless there are specific issues other posters will warn you about for this particular vehicle, it should be basically all bolt-on. Suspension parts do have a tendency to not like to come apart sometimes, however. There may be a lot of banging, prying, heating, cursing, etc. involved.
Hope this helps.

That is what i had figured, but was hoping that i could get away with not doing it. Right now i'm just trying to get an idea of what it is going to take to do this. Also, try to find any hits that will make this job much easier to do, or if the best idea is just to take it to a shop and let them deal with it.
