Transmision whine in first
From what I can tell its got the 5 speed auto transmission (per the book) but it shifts so smooth I cant tell. And until I looked in the book, I thought it was a 4 speed, anyway it has a slight whine in 1st gear only, it shifts smooth and is silent in all other gears, is this normal for this truck and transmission?
Also what was the first year for the 5 speed auto in a Ranger?
I'm new to Rangers and this site, so thanks for the help.
Mike.
As for your whine, i don't know much about auto's. maybe needs fluid change and check.
This 5-speed has a pretty low 1st gear so it's understandable to have some whine. In addition, IMO, these Rangers aren't really loaded up with sound proofing insulation, and they're small, = you're gonna hear some stuff that you wouldn't hear on a larger truck.
I'd say you're good, however seeing as it's a 2001 I'd suggest you chage the tranny fluid now and inspect the pan collection magnet for any unusual sized particles. Take a look at the top of the "Ranger/B-Series" page for a tacked thread. There's one in there that details how to change the fluid in your tranny.
Good luck with the new truck.
CMOS
The tranny is full and its clean, but with 34K miles I will have it changed soon, I'm sure its never been done, its even got the original tires, and they still look good.
The 1st gear sound does sound normal, its just that I'm not use to it I guess, and its not vary loud.
Does anybody know what was the first year that Ford put the 5sp auto in the Ranger?
Thanks Mike.
