Remote starter??? Can a remote starter be used on diesel engine equiped trucks? What about the preheat time?

Yes a remote start can be used on a diesel.I have the ultra start alarm/starter on my truck, works great. They used a delayed time for the GPs,selectable 10,20,30 secs wait time.
It also has allot of other features as well.

Yes, but not all remotes are compatiblewith diesels, just ensure the one you wish to buy is.

Thumbs up

Most remote start units are compatible with diesel engines. The Audiovox units I install can be set up with either a preset delay (10,20,30sec) before cranking or a "wait to start" wire that is tied into the glow plug light in the cluster-when the light goes out, the engine cranks.

Just a question out of curiosity. How long will it crank the engine? Most of the time people use remote start it is cold. Since diesels are harder to start in cold weather and don't always start on the first crank, I was wondering if it will crank for 5 sec and stop or what.

Thumbs up

Will not have another vehicle without a remote start and now I'm spoiled with the backup sensors
Believe it or not, cold weather starts are not the best feature IMHO

it's the black excursion that's been in the sun in August in Texus that is 105 degrees INSIDE
Letting that front and rear air run for 10 minutes or so is a life saver

My unit will crank the engine for 5 to 6 secs,as its checking for the tach,to see if the engine is running.
If it does not start the first time,it will retry. It will do this 3 times, each time turning off the ingition and turning it back on (waiting for the light),if the truck does not start after the 3rd time,it shuts down.

Thumbs up light

I've seen that particular feature at work and yes it does work well when connected to the dash light with a diode to prevent the light from backfeeding ground to the remote start module.

not to hijack, but does anyone know where wiring diagrams for our trucks can be seen on the net to install these things? pay or free
Thanks - Randy

I installed a Crimestopper remote starter in my F350 diesel this last fall. Overall it went pretty good. I set mine up to wait a set amount of seconds before it cranks over. 10 seconds if I recall. Also, many remote starters have a "smart" tach feature. I didn't actually have to hook to my tach at all. The remote starter monitors the vehicles voltage while it's cranking. Once the vehicle starts, the voltage increases, the cranking stops. I had to adjust the sensitivity on mine but once I did that it has worked great. My unit also came set up for a turbo timer. I just had to install a momentary on switch. There were a lot of neat features that came with the unit I bought and I thougt it was money well spent.

I like the way yours works... Have you had any problems with it? Did you install it yourself, if so, how hard was it? About how much did you pay for it if you dont mind me asking? Thanks...

Great Deal!

Getting the Unit and access to wiring diagrams is well worth the $100! on the other subject of waiting to start, I just installed an ultra start 1270A in a 04 F-350 tonight and the unit has a setting that will let you delay the starting for 15 seconds when you program the unit, that was a time saver over the installation of a diode to the wait to start light wiring. I don't see any reason why 15 seconds won't be long enough ever and when I timed it it was more like 17 seconds, so I'm gonna recommend this unit to diesel owners.
Thanks for the info green_dually and yes please share your sellers email.
Thanks Randy
