Ok, i had an AFE stage 2 ready to be put on my truck, ended up selling it to my friend for some quick cash to pay an unexpected bill. now that i have the money back i have 3 options 1. buy a DP tuner 2. buy another AFE 3. trade the truck in for a newer onw (currently have a early 99 .. )
i have a K&N filter on my truck and a bully dog power pup tuner but i think that thing is BS when i reach a certain point on my pedal on the highway (about 80%) the enging tone gets a lot louder and my boost pressure actually drops. So my point is i think either my BD tuner is BS or i am not getting enough air.
I think your problem with your engine changing tone and your boost dropping is from overboosting and defueling. Just a guess. I would get rid of the K&N filter before you need to replace your turbo wheel and maybe worse.
You could save even more money and get the kwik 6637 air filter for 25 bucks, best filtering money can buy. Do a search for kwik 6637 and read up. Fleetfilters.com is where there at. Then spend money on gauges before a tuner thats my .02
i love my early 99 (build date 3/98) now with the mod's i have on it..i pull a boost of 25 alot and no problems...got a friend with an 02 f250 psd with a 100hp super chip and no tc lock..i leave him every time on take off in my 80 econo..but about 70 mph he starts to gain on me till we hit 97 mph then i go back by him..my DP deletes the speed limiter..i do want to upgrade the hpop, injectors and turbo some day but want to do it right so i dont have surge..IMO its better to upgrade the early 99 cause we have the good rods in these trucks not the pmr's.. it still takes money to get rid of surge in a 99.5 and up any ways..keep your truck and show it some love..it will love you back..
Like kwik says, the 6637 mod and then a 4" turbo back exhaust. I'm assuming you havn't upgraded your exhaust cause its not in your post or sig. These diesels love air, gotta let it out. I love my early 99 and I considered getting a newer truck but w/ the early 99 and all the money I'd save I will continue to upgrade what I got.
Sorry about the Sig guys, im still a noob i will get my sig on here.
I actually have a 5 inch turbo back exhaust (4in d pipe)
BD power pup dloader
Pyro, boost, trans temp gauges
snow stage three boost charge cooler, (not complete yet)

the engine tone changes only when i am using a power setting from the programmer, i dont see how i could be over boosting i only run 17 psi. My guess is the motor getting louder is a change in the fuel curve for the BD programmer.
Alot of people swear by the AFE. I have whats considered to be a Tymar set up which I didn't get from Tymar but its the same thing. Tymar setup is basically a 6637 mod w/smooth pipe. Look up the systems on search and you will find everything. All those other mods that you've done will work a whole lot better w/ a good intake. Trash that K&N and upgrade.
since i have an early 99 will i have to get a bigger intake pipe?
also you reccomend this method over getting the AFE stage II? it just seems that a smmother pipe would create less turbulance.
Thanks for your help!!
You'll need to get a piece of 4" pipe to bridge the gap between your intake boot and the filter. Mine is a late '99 and you can see by the picture that it's a simpler install.
The AFE will work the same, but cost more. The choice is yours.
