Ignition Timing

I have adjusted the timing on my 351m several times already.At first it was poping through the carb so I checked the timing and it was a couple degrees retarded so I adjusted it to TDC.Which now it runs great,but it has to turn over for a couple seconds before it fires up(even when warm).So today I went ahead and advanced it some.Now it starts up right away.So I'm just wondering am I losing power by having it firing a couple degrees advance.i am making all the adjustment with the advance unpluged.

Are you using a timing light or not ?

There are different things that can affect timing.

RPM when setting
slop in chain to gears
vacuum advance seized or leaking diaphram
mechanical advance weights weak or broken.

Generally speaking you can add a little to the stock timing number. If it kicks back on starting you've gone too far. Use a light to be sure where you are at.
